Girinka (One Cow per Family) programme is one of Rwanda’s poverty reduction strategies aiming at improving people’s social and economic status.
The program is promoted in its condition that whoever gets a cow will give out the first calf to the next neighbour and so on. The cows provide milk for consumption, income earning manure for boosting crop farming.
Rulindo district is steadily supporting Girinka program as a strategy of poverty reduction. According to Prosper Murindwa the Vice Mayor for Finance and Economic Affairs in the district, getting a cow shifts individuals from one social level to the next.
Cyinzuzi sector residents commended the district support in many programs especially Girinka that has helped in eradicating poverty and poor eating habits.
HPI project operates in three sectors namely; Ntarabana, Masoro and Cyinzuzi The project has so far given out 152 cows for promotion of Girinka program to its beneficiaries in the said sectors.
