Most of the adults learning how to read and write in Musha sector of Gisagara district say they missed the chance of education because of the ignorance of their parents who would send them out to graze cattle instead of going to school.
Though this was an impediment to their education, these adults say they will not miss a chance of learning even in old age just as what happened in their past.
The 28 years old Pierre Manirakiza and Josephine Nyirabahutu the 50 years old are some of the adults learning how to read and write in adults schools in Musha sector. These adults have 2 things in common, they missed the chance to go to school because of their parents’ ignorance but now they are working hard to recover that chance by attending adult schools.
“With the current situation, it is not good to live as illiterate given the chances to learn reading and writing by our government” Says one elderly Zeburoni Nshimiryayo. “I decided to go back to the adults’ school, learn how to read and write without considering people who said it is a waste of time.”
Though age is another factor for Josephine Nyirabahutu to easily understand what she learnt, she is hopeful that slowly she will become literate like most of Rwandans.
Adults’ schools are the establishments of the government in its program to have literate citizens. According to UNESCO, 1 out of 7 people is illiterate worldwide.
