The district is also encouraging coffee growing by supporting coffee growers on how to professionally participate in this farming.
Coffee is an economic crop that promotes its growers
According to Prosper Mulindwa the vice mayor for finance and economic development in Rulindo district, the district is setting new strategies to stop poor usage of coffee production as well as chaotic trading of coffee production.
The vice mayor says “the coffee growers are working in chaotic conditions, some sell their coffee beans when they are still quite young at cheap prices and others sell the produce to people from other districts and we are out to stop such conditions.”
The vice mayor says the chaotic conditions surrounding the coffee growers is caused by farmers who do not give much value to their coffee and sell it on cheaper prices and people who buy it get profits from it.
Didace Twagirimana a member of Inyongeramusaruro cooperative and a coffee grower for 30 years says his life is based on the way he works on his coffee. “I grow coffee professionally, built a nice house and saw my 10 children through schools and I maintain and provide for my family all from this coffee.”
Twagirimana says coffee is a great deal of profits if tended well and value their coffee produce. “If coffee growers can follow the advice given to them by agriculture experts in their sectors, their coffee produce would give them more returns.”
Rulindo district has 20 cooperatives for coffee growers with coffee grown on 1900 hectares. The district expects to grow more coffee in this economic year 2013/2014 with 1,750,000 coffee seedlings.
