Gakenke: World Vision teaches children about hygiene through competition

As sanitation promotion strategy among the young, World Vision organization prepared sanitation and hygiene based competition for Primary and Secondary Schools in Gakenke sector in Gakenke district. The most performing schools won a large screen television among others rewards.


This sanitation competition was carried out through songs and poems with the theme saying “striving for education in clean environment at school and home.” This competition was on Monday the 2nd.Sept.2013.

These students through their compositions showed that hygiene is the source of life and need to be maintained. Hygiene should be put in consideration before eating, after using the toilets and living in hygienic places.

For Aimable Nsengiyumva the coordinator of World Vision ADP Nyarutovu, this competition was prepared to maintain good health of young children by informing them how to be hygienic and living in clean environment.


“I am sure every child present today will to learn every lesson taught today and to fight all unhygienic conditions and have good health” says Aimable Nsengiyumva.

World Vision Organization supported schools in maintain good sanitation and hygiene by giving them different sanitary tools and built them 32 toilets and bathrooms.

All schools that participated in this competition were awarded especially the first 3 schools of Karuganda Secondary School, Gakenke Protestant Primary School and Musave Secondary School. These schools were given large screen television set, equipment for holding washing water, big bottles for keeping water, bags among many things.

“This competition was good but it would be more helpful if it was held once or twice every year, for everyone to learn about sanitation and hygiene” says Francine Uwimaniduhaye a student of Rukura Secondary School.

With the support of Ubuzima-Wash project that participated in this competition, World Vision is planning on supplying water to the residents of Nemba and Gakenke sector and to construct 32 toilets by the end of this year.
