Police in Nyagatare district is holding four men in connection with poaching animals at Akagera National Park.
According to Police officials at Nyagatare Police station, the suspects were arrested red handed while poaching through Akagera National Park to hunt animals.
The District Police commander, Supt. Callixte Kalisa warned residents from encroaching the national park in hunt of wild animals.
Speaking to Journalists, the Police commander said that the suspects were arrested while chasing Zebra at one Ndegeya’s farm near Akagera National Park in Karangazi sector.
“Among the suspects we arrested include some that had already killed a Zebra and sold it to residents at Rwf40, 000,” he said.
The Police commander added that the suspects were arrested after intentionally killing two Zebras and a Kobe.
He warned residents neighbouring Akagera National Park that there are laws in place to protect wild animals and measures are in place against illegal hunters
If convicted, the suspects face a sentence between 3 months to two years with a fine ranging from Rwf300, 000 to 2million.
