Parents, teachers in a meeting discussing disabled children problems
The National Union of Disabilities’ Organization in Rwanda [NUDOR] called on parents, teachers and other education officials in Ngororero district to support disabled children which will help them perform better in school just like other students.
This was a call made after NUDOR realized that such children perform poorly in class because of the different hindrances they face.
“In this district 88percent of such children do not go to school because of different problems they have to go through and yet ones that go still do not perform well” ,as noted by NUDOR.
Among the many hindrances faced by these children is getting late to schools because of their disabilities, lack of self-esteem, lack of materials to use, some teachers not respecting them, the poorly constructed class rooms which do not provide easy access, parents not taking care of their children well because of poverty, among others problems.
This does not mean however that all such children cannot perform well since there are some who compete with other children and therefore do well in class.
“Teachers should be trained on how to deal with such children”, said the parents during a meeting to discuss the different problems disabled children face.
The teachers and education officials also called on parents and different other Rwandan societies to always handle such children with care which will help them develop self -esteem and confidence.
“I have a disabled child who was scared of going to school because he did not have any friends but now with the support I give him he is doing well”, said one parent Serafina Nduwayezu.
She advised parents and other people to handle such children carefully which she said can help them perform better than even the normal children
