Rice growers in Rwasave marshland in Gisagara district have said that growing one crop type has enabled them to fight poverty.
Residents say this after fully understanding the benefits of land consolidation where they harvested much rice for consumption and for sale.
Residents say they used to grow potatoes and maize in the same fields but never harvested enough to help them in daily life. This includes acquiring mutual health insurance and sending children to school.
Pascal Kagabo, one of the residents narrates: “We could not get enough food for consumption but after getting advice from local authorities, we harvest enough rice for consumption and save for the market.”
Like her fellow residents in Ngororero district, Vilsensiya Uwimana confirms that they wouldn’t achieve social development if not for land consolidation that increased rice productivity.
Rice was chosen for the residents to be grown in marshland in different districts replacing other crops to increase the yields.
