In two different Community Innovation Centers of Gatore and Kigarama CCIs, introduces a new gender mainstreaming section of empowering women and youth to be active and deliver on programs that aim at increasing agriculture produce.
Speaking with reporter DR. Agnes KALIBATA Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources noted that, “Understanding gender inequalities are critical to addressing weak linkages that hamper quality and growth in a value chain, as well as poverty reduction and empowerment. In general, promoting gender equality in rural areas is vital because of issues regarding to land regularization, family development, and raising income level shares between spouses and descendants”.
Kirehe Community-Based Watershed Management Project (KWAMP), that conducted the training and introduced the campaign will support the creation of sound local institutions for the sustainable management of local land and water resources in about 15 watersheds. Including 2,000 ha of irrigated land; protecting; intensifying 20,000 hectors of cultivated catchment area and providing cattle and goats for animal solidarity chains.
Sponsored by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations and the Ministry of Agriculture & Animal Resources (MINAGRI), KWAMP intends to respond to the food crises and stimulating job creation among many youth and women, as the process of boosting agriculture sector as well clear stated in the EDPRS II and Vision 2020.
On his statement Mayor of Kirehe district, Protais Murayire said, “Gender inequality and the norms of masculine behavior in the household and community are key causes of poverty, and result in poor bargaining power of women, as well as men producers” and promised the Kirehe dwellers to obtain positive results from the project.
The project initiates community-led methodology for market and value chain development, which aims at pro-poor wealth creation and gender justice. Methodologies include improving livelihoods in ways that give more benefits by targeting women and men most vulnerable in the chain; establishing multi-stakeholder consensus on the morals and business imperatives promoting gender justice and prioritizing the needs and interests of the weakest and most vulnerable parts of the chain among others.
Wetlands in Rwanda have been used in different ways and have a great role to play in the national economy. Main functions of wetlands in Rwanda include agriculture production, hydrological functions, biodiversity reservoirs, peat reserve, mitigation of climate change, leisure and tourism and cultural value.
