Gatsibo residents get clean water and biogas

Launching biogas projects in Gatsibo

The Ministry of Infrastructure, in partnership with World Vision Rwanda and Gatsibo District launched Water and Biogas projects in Kabarore and Rwimbogo sectors.

The water supply system that was inaugurated was Kanwiriri-Kabarore with a total length of 12.4 Km. 7,844 households, 2 health centers, 10 schools and other community centers such as Banks, Police stations and Kabarore trading center in general will benefit from getting safe and clean water.

Eight new public taps were also constructed and will supply clean water to Kabeza and Gatoki residents in Rugarama sector. The project was financed by World Vision and Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA).

According to EWSA, they are ensuring that water infrastructures are protected, used, developed, conserved, managed and controlled in a sustainable and equitable manner for promotion of good health to the population as water remains an important essential element for humans.

District authorities over the last 2 years, water supply in Gatsibo District has moved from 26 percent to 49 percent.

Information from the Ministry of Infrastructure says that to increase the access of water in the district, there are some upcoming water projects such as: Cyampirita of 15 Km that will supply Rugarama sector, Byimana – Gakeke of 25Km that will supply Murambi and Kiramuruzi sectors and 33 Km to supply Remera and Biyanaga sectors. These water supply systems to be installed will increment the water access to 70 percent.

261 Biogas systems in Gatsibo District have also been constructed and this has empowered potentiality by providing opportunities for better economic growth.

The increased use of Biogas in the District has contributed to protection of the environment. With the construction of Biogas Systems, the users no longer encroach on forests for fire wood as they use cow dung for the production of gas which is used for cooking and light and residue used for manure for their plantations.

Residents no longer in collecting fire wood. Students have time to study on time and women have time to cater for other developmental projects that would promote their families, rather than cooking alone. Biogas is fast, efficient and cheap to use.
